I know you’re supposed to tell kids not to do drugs, but, kids, do it!  Do Weed!  Don’t do the other stuff, but Weed is good!
--Kevin Smith

The world of drugs is much different than it was even a decade ago.  In 2012, Colorado legalized Recreational Marijuana.  Eight years later, Cannabis is now legal in 11 states for adults over the age of 21, and legal for medical use in 33 states (which means we’re over the 50% tipping point).  This makes the Cannabis industry is one of the fastest growing businesses in the history of our modern economy.  The end of this decade found Marijuana to have reached $15 Billion dollars a year in the United States alone.  It’s safe to say: the world of Green, has become mainstream.

So with all this in mind, last week Edible Skinny was lucky enough to experience the expansive growth of the Cannabis industry at MJBizCon, sponsored by Marijuana Business Daily.  Founded in early 2011, Marijuana Business Daily focuses solely on Cannabusiness and the investors who back them.  Because this industry infinitely expands every year, a natural extension is the expansion of the largest Cannabis conference out there.  When the conference began in 2012 there were 400 people in attendance; flash forward 7 years with 2019 seeing 35,000 Cannabis business leaders and investors from 75 plus countries represented.

While bouncing around MJBizCon this year, ES experienced some fun products such as Mary Natural’s Boost Bomb (which we reviewed in our Art Basel Product Review article) and the CBD brand October Biosciences.  October Biosciences’ patent-pending water-soluble formula absorbs more readily than most other CBD products in the market (their absorption rate is a whopping 80%!).  The result, is the end consumer gaining a whole lot more CBD in their system.  Which is AWESOME, because this means you can actually use less of October Biosciences to achieve your desired effect on muscular, nerve, or joint pain.  All Hail Marijuana Technology!

The majority of our MJBizCon conference experience was focused on Cova Software’s prohibition themed party where The Green Light District (of which yours truly is a Co-Creator) was the featured entertainment.  This Gatsby inspired party was hosted by the Cova Software team, along with event partners UNOapp, Headset, Point7, SevenPoint Interiors, springbig, merrco, and media partner mg Magazine.  Their prohibition party was planned and executed with Jay Gatsby perfection by Cova’s Vice President of Marketing Faai Steuer.

The Soiree featured The Green Light District Band, which performs your favorite Cannabis songs covered in 1920s vintage style (think if Snoop Dogg was sung by Ella Fitzgerald).  Fronted by Sultry Songstress Erin Baltsar and accompanied by musicians Kevin Stewart, Jay Yaskin, and Nate Yeasley, this cover band was accented by plucky tap dancer Becky Fullington in a fusion of percussive shoe rhythm and live music.  Other delights including a pair of alpacas, roulette and craps gaming tables, and two Absinthe stations, one via a hand sculpted butterfly ice luge.  The speakeasy effect of the night was crowned with a burlesque floor show featuring “the Most Dangerous Woman in Hollywood” Tonya Kay playful splashing around into a six-foot-tall martini glass.  It was a party fit for Daisy Buchanan, if she smoked the Flower!

So here’s to life being delicious, all your moments being postcard worthy, and doing drugs (legally).

Charity Cannabis Calendar for Veterans Censored by State

Our Editor in Chief, Kat Thomas recently wrote an article that was featured in the Cannabis website Civilized entitled Charity Cannabis Calendar for Veterans Censored by State about The Emerald Dames of Sin City.  Check it out below!

Charity Cannabis Calendar for Veterans Censored by State

By Kat Thomas

You can't fight City Hall, but one group of Cannabis Pin-Ups is doing just that to help raise money for Veterans suffering from PTSD!

From Betty Grable donning the nose of WW2 fighter plane to Rosie the Riveter arching her back for the cause, throughout history pictures of pretty ladies have help raised money for Active Duty Service Members and Veterans. So with that in mind, in August of 2017, Cannabis photography company Dope Foto and Cannabis entertainment group The Green Light District came together to create the inaugural issue of The Emerald Dames of Sin City, a Las Vegas Charity Pinup Calendar.

“For us, creating the calendar is a way to rally public support for Veterans rights to utilize Cannabis once they’ve returned home from serving our country,” notes producer Julia Reed Nichols, who's company Do Right Industries produced the calendar. “Thus, 10% of the proceeds from The Emerald Dames of Sin City will go to the award-winning Cannabis non-profit Grow For Vets.” Grow for Vets is a tax exempt organization that helps Veterans with PTSD, TBI, chronic pain, and other serious medical conditions obtain and grow Cannabis. In 4 years since forming, the group has served more than 40,000 Veterans and given away $1.5 million in free Cannabis to Veterans in states where medical Marijuana is legal.

A Marijuana user due to epilepsy, the combination of Pin-Ups, Cannabis, and raising money for Veterans was the perfect fit for Nichols. The last of those being something she knows quite a lot about. In the last three years Nichols' entertainment company Pin-Ups on Tour (a division of Do Right Industries) has donated $50,000 in free Veteran tickets and monetary donations to Veteran non-profits such as AmVets, Heels For Combat Boots, Recon Sniper Foundation, Pin-Ups For Vets, American Legion posts, VFW posts, and Grow For Vets. Her Pin-Ups on Tour shows have been performed in 45 states bringing together 9,000 people to support our troops. She has been able to donate over 2,400 tickets to Veterans, and have been able to entertain close to 3,000 Active Duty and Veteran Service Members in our nation's VA Hospitals and Veterans Homes.

The cost of the creation of the project (photography; hiring models, makeup artists, and hairstylists; wardrobe; and printing of the calendar) was offset by potential sponsorship of each page month (and the cover) by a different Marijuana brand. In the end 4 Cannabis brands chose to participate, 3 of which are MMEs (Medical Marijuana Establishments).

Although the calendar itself is a piece of editorial work, sponsorship of a month by an MME was considered advertisement which required the MME submit it to the Department of Taxation, the Marijuana Enforcement Division.

The 6x6 inch calendar was printed in early November and pre-sales commenced. An article was even published in Civilized during Veterans Day week about the work we were doing. All that was left to do was wait for State approval for our 3 MME sponsored pages. But on 11/29, weeks after our MMEs had submitted, 2 out 3 of our MME pictures were rejected by the Department of Taxation.

The two images in questions: January which was an image of a stylish lady in a sequined sparkly gown holding a unlit joint in one raised hand and a jar containing Marijuana flower in the other; and February which was an image of a Pin-Up chef holding a flour dusted wooden spoon close to her happily grinning mouth. According to the State, both indicated “Intent to Consume.”

This rejection this was a surprise to both the producers and sponsors. “As a photographer in the Cannabis industry for 3 years, I am plenty aware of the state regulations in regards to consumption of Cannabis in photographs,” notes calendar photographer and producer Shannon Dorn of Dope Foto. “We made sure all models were in the safe zone at all photo shoots; no one was to consume and no one was to look as though they were consuming.”

But with the potential for the sponsors to be fined $50K or more, The Emerald Dames of Sin City had to figure out a solution. Within 24hrs, we sent our contact at the Department of Taxation, Marijuana Enforcement Division alternative photos from which they could chose a replacement image. Thus, allowing us to sticker over the censored images and release the calendar while still including our sponsors.

The Nevada Marijuana Enforcement Division's decisions on whether advertisements are acceptable are ruled by committee. “Their choices can seem very arbitrary at times,” states Nichols. “It's like that old statement about pornography... I'll know it when I see it.” Recently an advertisement for a Cannabis infused beverage company's Mango flavored product was rejected by the State because it included shots of Mango fruit in the ad. The explanation: Kids like fruit and thus the picture could potentially be advertising to children...

In mid December, two weeks after our MMEs resubmitted their images, our December month MME received an email stating that their January MME picture (the same MME sponsored January and December, just with different specific brands) was rejected because the model was holding an alcoholic beverage. Yet that statement is erroneous as the January model is holding, as previously noted, a jar of flower and not an alcoholic drink.

The Marijuana Enforcement Division also informed this MME that The Emerald Dames of Sin City cover image and our June page were also reasons the calendar could potentially get rejected. Their rational was that the cover image involved consuming vape pens. But although the pen is near our models lips, it is not in fact touching. And as for our June image, the State was inclined to dismiss it because the image showed “the model with what would assumed to be an alcoholic drink. Yes it technically 'could be juice,' etc. but the perception of a martini glass or a glass of anything at what appears to be a party would be alcohol.”

It is illegal for advertising images to include both alcohol and Marijuana in the same shot. Yet our model held in her hands a martini glass full of blue sugar water and nothing more. The glass was chosen to indicate a classy time not alcohol, to indicate sophistication not booze. A glass is just a vessel, technically defined as “a drinking container.” What is inside of it, ice cream, water, or alcohol, defines it's specific use.

But these details are unimportant as the Department of Taxation, Marijuana Enforcement Division does not have a right to regulate these images at all as these pictures were editorial pages from the calendar, not MME advertisements.

All of this red tape is never good for business. “We had numerous pre-orders on this charity calendar from Veterans across the nation wanting to give it as a Christmas gift...,” notes Nichols. “We were sitting on 3,000 calendars that we couldn't legally distribute. Calendars are timely in nature; they usually only sell from a window of November to February. This means to raise the most money possible for Grow For Vets the product needs to be available as soon as possible.” To add to the frustration, this calendar is the fastest selling pinup calendar Do Right Industries has ever produced.

Due to the seasonal nature of calendars and the fiduciary responsibility we have to Grow For Vets, The Emerald Dames of Sin City has decided to sticker over our 3 MME sponsored pages of the calendar (and the back cover with their logos). This will make the calendar fully editorial. “Once our MMEs have heard from the State, we'll be happy to sell the complete calendar,” notes Nichols. “But until then, this was our only course of action without having them receive a hefty fine.”

“On a larger note, we felt we needed to let the world know the state of bureaucracy when it comes to Cannabis advertising policies in the state of Nevada,” continues Nichols. “We set out to make a fun charity calendar to bring the Cannabis Community of Las Vegas together, but the degree of hoops we've had to try and jump through on this experience has reached Kafka-esque levels. This is a Marijuana experience that needs to be more known by people looking to do Cannabis business in Nevada.”

But for right now there's stickering to be done! Because despite a few bureaucratic bumps, there's still 3,000 calendars to be distributed and sold. With The Green Light District negotiating shows for the upcoming months in Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle, The Emerald Dames of Sin City with be hitting the road as merchandise at these events.

For at the end of the day the focus has always been about raising money for a great Cannabis non-profit. “There are Veterans out there who need help, and contributions from this calendar do our part in making this happen,” notes photographer Shannon Dorn. “It's only right that we do what we set out to do: raise funds Grow For Vets so they can help Veterans find a safer and alternative medicine through Cannabis.”

You can order your calendar for The Emerald Dames of Sin City online at thegldexperience.com You can either purchase one for yourself or donate to a Veteran allowing your calendar to be distributed in GFV Cannabis care packages.

A Carnival of Wonders: Dope Dining’s Cannabis Infused Dining Experience!

On last Friday, Edible Skinny was lucky enough to attend our first Dope Dining Experience.  The event, was a cannabis infused Carnival dining experience that was a kickoff to the Las Vegas’ HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup (and in our humble opinion, was much better than the actual cup itself)!

Dope Dining’s second all-inclusive infused experience was celebrated by YouTube stars such as Silenced Hippie, cannabis industry leaders, and marijuana enthusiasts.  The night was filled with infused sweet and savory treats, Carnival style entertainment (much of it unicorn themed as one of the night’s sponsors was the cannabis based PR company Social Media Unicorn), and live music.  Fun is a dish best served elevated, as patrons were able to enjoy sweet and savory edible treats crafted by Dope Dining private chef Marysia such as: White Chocolate Infused Bacon Topped with Magical Sprinkles, Empanadas with Infused Apples and Cinnamon, and Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Waffles Served with an Infused Maple Syrup.

As recreational use is legalized in more and more states (including California and Nevada), infused dining experiences will become more commonplace.   In California, MJU High Dining hosts a Sushi and Doobie Rolling workshop and Colorado’s Cultivating Spirits offers a three-course cannabis fine dining experience.  Infused dining has recently been featured in mainstream media such as VH1’s “Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party” and Viceland’s “Bong Appetit.”

Featured edible brands at Dope Dining’s Carnival included the San Diego based Therapy Tonics, a cannabis iced coffee & tea brand made with the finest natural ingredients to give you that extra special feeling.  Therapy Tonics’ products are gluten free, solvent free, non-GMO, and contain organic ingredients.   Our favorite flavor profile was their Vanilla Caramel Coffee.   The delightfully delicious drink, and flagship

product, was developed as a tribute to the long-standing love affair people across the globe share with coffee.  This edible sativa shot contains the energizing power of caramel perfectly paired with the calming effect of vanilla and the percolating flavor of freshly roasted Arabica beans.

Another notable brand featured at Dope Dining’s Carnival was the San Diego based B. Edible, offering out infused cotton candy spun live during the event.  B. Edibles’ childlike wonder confections are made with organic ingredients and infused with lab-tested CO2 solvent-less extractions.  Whimsical flavors include Rose Petal, Juicy Watermelon, and Lavender.

Non-edible delights offered at the Carnival included a full service dab and flower bar, infused chair massage, face painting, a tarot card reader, and caricature artist.  Live singers and specialty artists were provided by the Las Vegas/Los Angeles based vintage cannabis cabaret company: The Green Light District.

Be forewarned, infused dining events are not for the uninitiated.  Knowing your dosing limits is a must.  The commonplace edible phrase, “start low and go slow” should be practiced as it is very easy to consume higher levels of THC than usual with delectably infused food.   Remember that edibles normally take anywhere between 20-40 minutes to take effect.

Although it might sound counter intuitive to most dinner parties you’ve been to, make sure to eat before you attend an infused dining event.   Empty tummies make the effects of cannabis happen quicker and in a more intense manner, so make sure to nosh on that apple before going.
But don’t get paranoid when it comes to infused dining.  If you happened to be overmedicated and need to counteract the psycho-activity of THC all you need to do is utilize CBD.  A few drops of CBD oil will take you out of your head and bring you back into your body.  And, naturally, make sure to drink plenty of water.

So if you find yourself invited to one of Dope Dining’s exclusive infused dining experiences make sure to attend.  Infused dining is an experience not to be missed, on any plane.

Vintage Mixers Powell & Mahoney Sponsors Burlesque Fundraiser for Vets

Workin’ The Tease (the burlesque internet channel that is co-produced by Edible Skinny editor Kat Thomas) was lucky enough to partner with awesomely stylish vintage mixer brand, Powell & Mahoney, last weekend on the Roaring 20s burlesque fundraiser The Green Light District to raise funds for Veterans with the non-profit Pin-Ups for Vets.

Held Saturday February 7th, 2015 at 7:00pm at the Crest Theater in Westwood, CA the Green Light District was a celebration of all things vintage glamour; an event that would have Daisy Buchanan green with envy!

The night included Gatsby inspired burlesque numbers performed in front of classic silent films, circus acts, typewriting poets in the lobby, and larger than life glittery sparkly burlesque numbers!  The glamorous lineup included the Most Dangerous Woman in Hollywood Tonya Kay, Seduction Queen Jessabelle Thunder, The Stunning Siren Noire, tap sensation Buddy Watson, and Workin' The Tease creators Kitty Kat DeMille and Mona Bella.  All these numbers were tied together by Electro Swing maestro DJ Skyler, who earlier this year opened for Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett at the Cosmopolitan on New Year’s Eve.

The Vermont based Powell & Mahoney, which produces handcrafted, all-natural cocktail mixers using only natural and organic ingredients, was the exclusive mixer sponsor at The Green Light District.  The tony night included tastings of their Old Ballycastle Ginger, Lemon Sour with Bitters, and Cosmopolitan all blended with the timeless spirit of vodka.

The classic Cosmo mixer of cranberry, lime juice, and cane sugar edged towards the sweeter side while still maintaining the balance necessary for a great mixer.  In contrast, the Lemon Sour with Bitters walked the perfect edge of sour and sweetness.  But, the highlight of the night was the nuanced Old Ballycastle Ginger with flavor profiles that included spicy ginger, delicate elderflower, and a hint of sharp fennel.  The finish was direct ginger with a spicy heat aftertaste.

For over two decades, Brian Powell & Mark Mahoney have traveled the world, sampling the finest creations from the most talented and knowledgeable bartenders in the industry.  Along the way, they’ve collected recipes, techniques and stories, which they have used to craft their line of Powell & Mahoney Vintage Original Cocktail Mixers.  “Thank you so much to Powell & Mahoney for helping us to help our Nation’s Heroes with this donation,” noted Gina Elise vintage influencer and founder of Pin-Ups for Vets.

Since 2006 Pin-Ups for Vets has raised money for under-funded hospital programs that support America’s Veterans and recovering military service members.  Pin-Ups For Vets raises funds to improve Veterans' healthcare, donates funds to VA hospitals for medical equipment and program expansion, improves quality of life for ill Veterans across the United States through personal bedside visits to deliver gifts and show appreciation, promotes volunteerism at Veterans Hospitals, conducts morale-boosting events for military spouses, and boosts morale for deployed troops through delivery of care packages.  Due to their work with hospitalized Veterans they have been honored by Oprah Winfrey and recognized by Congress.

“We are so appreciative of the support.  One hundred percent of bar sales went back to the nonprofit and we couldn’t have done it without of amazing sponsors like Powell & Mahoney,” noted Julia Reed Nichols, producer of Workin’ The Tease and The Green Light District.
