Santa Monica
Seafood Festival Returns to The Pier!
By Kat Thomas
Edible Skinny was lucky enough to check out 3rd Annual OFF THE HOOK Seafood Festival at the Santa Monica Pier! Presented by Capital One, this year’s festival
benefited the Surfrider Foundation Los Angeles and was 100% Sustainable!
The festivities kicked off with a rocking set by the Black
Crystal Wolf Kids, the world’s first indie rock tribute band. This highly entertaining cover set was
chalked full of Coachella excitement featuring cover songs from favorite bands
such as The White Stripes, Artic Monkeys, and the Black Keys.
During this time period, myself and my guest enjoyed food
and drink tastings from restaurants such as Herringbone, Tar & Roses,
FIG, Sushi Roku and The Lobster while imbibing from the beer and wine
gardens.
Following Black Crystal Wolf Kids was 2017 Oyster Shucking
Competition, presented by Santa Monica favorite The Albright, open to both professional
and novice "shuckers," this event had seafood lovers competing on areas
such as presentation, time and overall ability.
I have to say you haven’t lived till you’ve seen an Oyster Shucking
Competition in action!
And all of this was for a great cause, as this year’s
festival benefited the Surfrider Foundation Los Angeles and was 100%
Sustainable! OFF THE HOOK was completely
free of all single-use plastic containers using only recyclable cups, straws
and disposable items. The Surfrider
Foundation hoped that all who attended this event will not only enjoy great
seafood, but learn about ways to reduce their single-use plastic footprint in
their everyday lives and help build a more sustainable future for ocean
ecosystems.
